What happens to your chat
When you choose a file, your browser reads it inside this tab and in background workers on your device: one reads the chat, another computes the SHA-256 fingerprints, and one handles the photos and the HTML archive. The chat, the photos and everything made from them stay in your device’s memory while the tab is open.
The PDF, the HTML archive, the CSV and the manifest are created on your device and saved where you choose. Nothing about them is sent anywhere.
Choosing Convert another, or closing the tab, releases them. Cancel stops the background work at once.
What never leaves your device
- the contents of your files: the chat, photos, voice notes, videos and documents;
- message text and participant names;
- file names and the SHA-256 fingerprints;
- dates and times from the chat;
- exact file sizes.
We couldn’t see them even if we wanted to: there’s no server that receives files. The site is a set of static pages, and all the work happens in your browser.
How this is enforced
- The security policy. On the tool page, the browser’s Content Security Policy only allows connections to this site and to Plausible’s event address (
plausible.io). Your browser blocks any other connection before it starts. - The offline copy. After your first visit, a service worker saves the site’s own files so the tool works offline. It saves only those files, never yours.
- Automated tests. Our tests run test chats through the tool and fail if any request carries a name, a word, a file name or a fingerprint from them.
You can check it yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, choose the Network tab, and convert a chat. Or turn on airplane mode after your first visit — the tool keeps working.
What we count
chatinprint counts a few things with Plausible, a cookieless analytics service, to learn whether the tool works and where it fails. Every value is one of a fixed list. This table is generated from the same list the code checks before anything is sent:
| Event | Properties and their allowed values |
|---|---|
file_loadedA file was loaded |
|
parse_doneThe chat was read |
|
unsupportedA file wasn't supported |
|
pdf_preparedA PDF was prepared |
|
print_openedThe print dialog opened |
|
export_downloadAn export was downloaded |
|
errorAn error appeared |
|
No names, file names, text, hashes or dates are ever sent.
Plausible also counts page views: the address of the page without anything after a ? or #, and the address of the page you came from, shortened the same way. When you leave a page, its tracker may also report how far you scrolled and how long the page was in view.
The sample chat (the “Try a sample chat” button) sends none of the events above.
Cookies and storage
The tool itself sets no cookies. Plausible is cookieless.
Your display preferences (layout, paper and text size) are kept in your browser’s local storage; nothing about your chat is stored there, or in session storage or IndexedDB. The offline copy lives in your browser’s cache, with a small index of the cached page addresses, and holds only the site’s own files. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes all of it.
Ads
This site currently shows no ads.
The tool page never shows ads. Your chat is shown only in pages that carry no ad code, and nothing about your file ever reaches an ad provider. Ads are never shown while your file is being read or your PDF is being prepared, and never appear in your PDF or other files.
Guides may show ads directly in the page; in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland a consent banner from a Google-certified consent platform asks first. The FAQ, this page and the licences page never show ads.
Links you click
Links to other sites, such as WhatsApp’s announcement, the licence sources and the policies on this page, open in a new tab and send those sites no referrer. For anything else your browser fetches from another site, it tells that site at most this site’s address, never the page you were on.
