First, check you’re in the right menu
Export chat is never on the chat screen itself, and WhatsApp keeps it in a different place on each kind of phone. Before you look for another cause, check you’re looking where WhatsApp puts it on yours.
On Android
Export chat isn’t in the first menu. Open the chat, tap ⋮, then More: Export chat is in that second list. It’s in the same place in a group chat.
On iPhone
There’s no export in the chat’s menu. Tap the contact or group name at the top, scroll to the bottom of the info screen, and tap Export Chat.
These are the same labels as our full export steps for Android and iPhone. If the option is where it should be in your other chats but not in this one, the next section is the one to read.
Someone turned on Advanced Chat Privacy
Since April 23, 2025, WhatsApp lets anyone in a chat turn on Advanced Chat Privacy. When any participant enables Advanced Chat Privacy, others cannot export the chat. When Export chat is missing in one chat but present in your others, this is the setting to check first.
The setting works in one-to-one chats and in groups, and any participant can switch it on, so it can be on in a chat even though you never changed anything. WhatsApp’s announcement says it also blocks others from “auto-downloading media to their phone, and using messages for AI features”.
Where to see it. WhatsApp’s announcement says the setting is turned on by tapping the chat name. It sits on the chat’s info screen: Advanced Chat Privacy on Android and Advanced Chat Privacy on iPhone.
What you can do. Talk to the people in the chat. Someone may have turned it on to protect a sensitive conversation. If they’re willing to change it, Export chat comes back. If the setting stays on, the chat can’t be exported, by you or by any app.
Read WhatsApp’s announcement (opens in a new tab)The chat is longer than one export
WhatsApp caps how many messages one export holds: reported: 10,000 recent messages with media and reported: 40,000 without, according to several sources. WhatsApp’s own help page for exporting a chat does not state a limit, so treat these numbers as unconfirmed.
In this case Export chat still appears and works, but the file starts partway through a very long chat: the oldest messages are the ones left out.
chatinprint’s cover page shows the period the PDF covers, from the first message’s date and time to the last one’s, so you can see exactly where an export begins before you rely on it.
Tip: exporting Without media keeps more text, by the reported limits. You can then make one PDF from the text-only export for the words and keep the media export for the photos.
You have a backup, not an export
Files named like msgstore.db.crypt14 or .crypt15 are WhatsApp’s encrypted backups, for example in Google Drive or on the phone. Only WhatsApp can read them, so chatinprint doesn’t try: it shows “This is an encrypted backup” with the steps to make an export instead.
A backup is for restoring your chats into WhatsApp. An export is the readable copy: a text file, with or without the media. Use Export chat to get one.
The export worked but photos are missing
If you chose Without media (Without Media on iPhone), photos appear only as a line like <Media omitted>. Export again with Include media or Attach Media.
If you included media but a file the chat refers to isn’t in the ZIP, for example because it’s no longer on your phone, chatinprint keeps the message and marks the file “Not included in export”. Before you print, it tells you how many files weren’t in the export, so nothing looks silently removed. The evidence appendix, when you include it, lists each one as missing.
On Android, some share options send the chat and its photos as separate files instead of one ZIP. Choose the .txt together with its media files in chatinprint, and it matches each file to its message.
The file won’t open in chatinprint
If chatinprint shows one of these messages, this is what it means and what to do:
| What chatinprint says | What to do |
|---|---|
| This doesn't look like a WhatsApp export | The file isn’t the chat text from Export chat. Choose the .txt or ZIP that WhatsApp made, not a file you saved from it. |
| No messages found. | The file holds only system notices, such as someone joining a group, and no messages. Check you exported the right chat. |
| Password-protected ZIP | The ZIP has a password. Export the chat again and save it without one. |
| One export at a time | chatinprint converts one export at a time. Pick a single ZIP, or one .txt with its photos. |
What chatinprint will never do
- Get around Advanced Chat Privacy or any other WhatsApp restriction.
- Sign in to your WhatsApp account, connect to WhatsApp Web, or use any Meta service on your behalf.
- Upload your chat. The file is read, and the PDF is made, on your device.
chatinprint never asks for your phone number, a password or a WhatsApp login: the export file is all it needs. You can check the last one yourself: after your first visit, switch on airplane mode and convert your chat. It still works, because nothing needs to leave your phone or computer.
